Argumentative Reflection

When hearing what this assignment was going to be about , I got super nervous and scared to do it throughout the break even though it was just a draft. The reason why I felt scared and nervous about doing this essay was because of my over thinking and feeling like I was going to pass but fail at the same time. So, when gathering information for my argumentative I’ve noticed that the process or time it took for me to gather them became shorter. The peer review from my partner in the end really helped me noticed things I missed that I thought I had included in my draft and how my proofreading process has changed.

Gathering information about a topic or thesis was never my favorite thing to do when writing an essays for this course because it meant that I had to use the college library database to get my evidence. Before, gathering information or evidence in the database took a lot of time considering I was not accustomed to Boolean terms but now, that time shortened since I took a new approach that I made. Once that new approach was made, I tried not to follow the old approaches because those approaches stressed me out. The new approach that I went with this time was just to use simpler words with Boolean terms and not write two whole sentences that are connected by these terms. When doing this new approach I noticed how I didn’t get easily stressed because the information that I wanted for my essay was popping up on my laptop screen unlike before, I would start to stress out on how to word what I want by using Boolean terms. In a way one could say that I am getting accustomed to the way the databases are because of this new approach that I was able to come up with along with the help of my past approaches.

Getting accustomed or used to the databases in away helped my process for creating my essay a little easier because gathering the information that I needed became less tougher. The new approach not only helped me gather information faster, but also helped by giving me more time to write and look over any errors that I could’ve made. Having more time to write helped me meet the requirements of the argumentative with ease considering I stayed with the Classical Orientation argument. The Classical Orientation is a type of academic argument that I am mostly familiar with compared to the other types of argument format and I stayed with this one because of that familiarity. My understanding of not just picking a side but also acknowledging its opposite is what I understood from these academic arguments. This understanding did not affect my writing by a lot because of the type of argument I decided to structure my essay with.

After writing my essay I did proofread even though it was a draft and in the process of proofreading, there were things that I noticed. When proofreading this essay I noticed that I tend to read the whole entire paper all over again to make sure that sentences do not run on or are readable because of the wording. I noticed this because it was a constant pattern of me rereading every paragraph, all over again. Another thing that I noticed when proofreading my essay was that I would read each line slowly to check whether the wording of the sentence made sense toward what the paragraph is talking about. Noticing these constant patterns whenever I was proofreading this essay helped me realize that I was not doing this with my other papers. Before, I only focused on my grammar majority of the time and not on how each sentences were worded. I’m really glad for noticing this because now I know that I cannot be focusing on grammar only, there are more to my essay that need to be looked over as well.

Once my argumentative was passed to my peer review partner I got really nervous because I did not know what they are going to say about my argumentative, but in the end of reading their response on blackboard I was very happy and slightly disappointed. When reading their response I was happy because I got a lot of positive comments on my essay such as my evidence being analyzed and connected well, but I was slightly disappointed because I was expecting a lot of suggestions like on things to improve or add on. In their response there was two to three suggestions to add and fix, which were to add a call to action, use signal phrases in my conclusion, and to look over my essay again to proofread more. I am grateful for these suggestions because they helped me realize that I did not include a call to action in my conclusion when looking over essay, but I was expecting more. When looking back at my peer review partner response, it just made me feel like I was being praised more than receiving constructive criticism on my essay.

Overall, there were many things that I noticed when doing this argumentative essay and things that I am grateful for. I’ve noticed how my proofreading process changed from not only checking for grammar, but also checking how my sentences were worded. Relying on how I approached the college library database with my other essays helped me come up with a new approach that shortened the time I spent in searching for the information that I needed. My peer review partner response helped me notice what I was missing in my conclusion, which I am grateful for, but I wanted more suggestions from them.
